How Winter Weather
Affects Your Roof
Winter in Idaho and Utah brings breathtaking snow-covered landscapes, but it also comes with weather that can be tough on your roof. Your roof is the first line of defense against the elements. Understanding how winter weather affects your roof can help you protect your home or business and avoid costly repairs.
Snow Load
We are no strangers to heavy snowfalls in Utah and Idaho. While roofs are designed to handle weight, excessive snow can cause stress. This may cause sagging, showing that the roof is under too much pressure, or leaks from cracks. In some rare cases, the weight of snow may damage the roof structurally and cause it to collapse. To help prevent damage, use a roof rake to remove heavy snow or hire a professional for safe snow removal.
Ice Dams
Ice dams form when heat from your attic melts snow on the roof, causing water to refreeze at the edges. This can trap water on your roof and lead to shingle damage, leaks, or mold growth. To keep this from happening, ensure that there is proper attic insulation and ventilation to keep your roof surface at a consistent temperature.
Freeze-Thaw Cycles
Daytime sun and freezing nights create freeze-thaw cycles. Water seeps into small cracks in your roof, then freezes and expands, making the cracks to grow. Over time, this will weaken your roof and lead to leaks. Schedule regular inspections to address minor cracks before winter sets in so that these cracks don’t grow into a bigger problem.
Wind Damage
Strong winter winds might loosen or rip off shingles or damage the edges of TPO membranes, leaving your roof vulnerable to further damage. Missing or damaged sections expose the underlayment and make it easier for water to seep in. To prevent further damage, inspect your roof after windstorms and replace any damaged areas.
Gutter Blockages
Clogged or frozen gutters prevent proper drainage, causing water to back up onto your roof. This can cause leaks, water damage, or make ice dams worse. To keep this from happening, clean your gutters in late fall and consider installing gutter guards to prevent debris buildup.
Winter Challenges for TPO Roofing
TPO roofing is durable and resistant to extreme weather, but it can still face challenges during the winter. TPO membranes may become less flexible in extremely low temperatures, increasing the risk of cracking or punctures if impacted by debris or heavy snow. In additions, water that pools on a TPO roof during the day can freeze at night, potentially causing the membrane to weaken over time. Be sure to have regular inspections for your roof so you can catch and address minor issues before winter has the chance to make them worse.
